Apogee Academy is a non-profit private school located in the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago’s northwest side. The school enrolls students ages five to eighteen and does not segregate students from one another based on age or any other characteristic. Students are free to mix with one another and learn from one another as they may choose. Students direct their own learning, and Apogee makes no assumptions about what a student must know or what a student is capable of. There are no tests or grades at Apogee nor are students required to do homework assignments or take any particular classes. Learning at Apogee is meant to be challenging but enjoyable. Apogee’s educational philosophy is based on the ideas and writings of the late John Holt who believed that children learn best when they are neither coerced nor judged on their efforts to educate themselves. Apogee is ideal for homeschoolers and unschoolers who are seeking a more social experience for their children as well as for parents whose children are aging out of Montessori Schools or other educational programs that also believe in educational freedom. Most daily activities at the school are spontaneous with children learning from play and conversation, but the school also offers classes based on student interest as well as frequent field trips and service opportunities. Finally, the school welcomes parents to join this community of self-directed learners and attend school with their children if they wish.
