Free Developmental Screenings At Aurora University

Infants, Toddlers Wanted For Aurora University Studies Feb. 28, March 20

AURORA, Ill.--An Aurora University physical education professor seeks Chicago-area infants and toddlers for free observations by college physical education students.

Alicia Cosky, director of the university's School of Physical Development and Recreation, said her 13th annual motor development labs are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, March 20.

According to Cosky, 10 infants and 20 toddlers are needed. Children will be enrolled on a first-come basis.

The public is invited to enroll infants ages four to 10 months and toddlers ages 1 to 3 years old for free observations of their motor development progress.

Infants will be observed from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 in room 320 in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora.

Toddler observations are from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, in Thornton gymnasium in Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Pl. in Aurora.

Under supervision of Cosky and parents or guardians, about 20 collegians will use toys and activities to assess youngsters’ reflexes, reactions, and other development indicators.

Collegiate researchers are students enrolled in "Physical Education 2600: Motor Development," an undergraduate course.

Cosky said, "Student observation of infants and toddlers in motion is a key component of the Motor Development class.

"Students present the young subjects with varied toys and other objects to manipulate. Then class members observe and note youngsters' developmental progress.

"The sessions are conducted in a relaxed and safe environment. Parents or guardians observe the process, and assist if a baby or toddler needs coaxing or comforting," Cosky said.

Advance registration is required. The deadline to sign up for the infant lab is Friday, Feb. 22; the deadline to register for the toddler lab is Friday, March 14. To register or for information, call (630) 844-6181.
