The Frosted Polypropylene Elephant in the Room

No one will be able to resist talking about this friendly-faced pachyderm, especially considering it's a lamp, too.

The super sleek, uber cool 3-D Elephant Lamp (shown at left, $69.50) from ingenious Scandanavian designer, multi4m, is inspired by one of the animal kingdom's most intelligent and sociable creatures - which basically means it's a guaranteed hit among the toddler and preschool-going set - but the best part hands-down has to be the easy, and dare I say, kind of fun, assembly.

Gasp!

You read correctly.

I said fun and easy in the same sentence as the word assembly.

multi4m makes it easy enough for even the chubbiest of chubby hands to get in on the action since no pointy hardware, fumey glue or power tools of any kind are required.

The lamp comes in two pieces - one is a pre-cut, tab-A-in-slot-B formatted piece of propylene that acts as the main lamp base (the elephant's body); and the second is a simple cord/bulb holder unit with an on/off switch that fits in through the elephants, um, poop chute.

Just follow the step-by-step instructions to fold yourself into some kind of origami-like nirvana of elephant bliss, manually screw in the bulb unit and enjoy.

Though the lamp definitely won't cost you peanuts, it makes for an inimitable gift.

Why not go whole hog, er, elephant, and add in the leather feet (shown at bottom right, $19), too while you're at it? They make a much better anchor for the lightweight lamp, since a stiff breeze could easily push it over.

Cosmomama says there's more in the details:
If you're a visual person like me, following the folding instructions via a drawing labeled with numbers didn't work out so well at first. I basically winged it in the end, figuring out the best way to make sense of it for my own zany brain.

The thorough and explicit directions for installing the bulb holder however, were much more comprehensive, and therefore, a snap to follow. It only takes a 40 watt bulb - the kind in junior's nightlight - so make sure you have the right wattage. Going too strong could easily turn your new friend into a funky firestarter.
