Moms and Props

Babies and winter weather don't exactly compliment each other.

Extra-puffy, extra-warm, extra-thick snowsuits and coats for the littlest city slickers can leave them looking extra-uncomfortable, drippy, sweaty and just plain overheated like the infamous, chubby-cheeked Randy from the movie A Christmas Story who couldn't put his arms down.

And, if you happen to be a city dweller - or a travel-light type of suburbanite - sometimes spontaneous, short-lived outings or errands just call for a carrier, but with all those extra layers thrown on, trying to strap baby safely into one is akin to getting a whole Thanksgiving turkey to fit snugly inside a hot dog bun.

Unless of course, mom and dad have a Popover from Beebles, LLC to battle the elements.

Designed by city savvy New York mama and self-proclaimed Baby Bjorn addict (me, too!) Jackie Haberfeld, the Popover - which is like an open-backed, slip-on, super-soft plush bunting - keeps baby warm while being carried in a front carrier or rolled around in a car seat or stroller.

Thick Polartec fleece eliminates the need for all those bulky snowsuits and other protective outerwear, and foldover mitten cuffs and a reversible hood, which lets baby face in or out while giving parents the opportunity to cover fuzzy cueballs, help add warmth, too. And, as if that weren't enough, the Popover provides lightweight water- and wind-resistance, too.

Choose from a wide range of bright, classic colors like Basic New York City Black, A Little Brighter Than Navy Blue, Delicious Jersey Tomato Red (shown at top left), Cute As A Button Spring Green, Grammar School Eraser Pink and Great South Bay Sandy Khaki (shown at right).

Once you're back inside and its time to ditch baby's winter trappings, simply slip the whole thing right off without having to undo the carrier, undo any straps on the car seat or unbuckle anything on the stroller.

I can't even take my own coat off that quickly or easily. $90

Cosmomama says there's more in the details:
The Popover is machine washable and won’t pill or shrink (it's true, I tested it out), but if you have a long, lean kind of kiddo like my Willster, definitely order up a size - they come in S/M and M/L. Mine ended up being too short, so I had a heck of a time trying to cram his tiny fists into the attached mittens without leaving his tender wrists exposed to the cold.

Can't decide on a color from looking online? That's ok. Go try one out for yourself (take baby along, too). Click here for a list of local retailers: http://www.popoverbaby.com/findastore.html
