In an attempt to see how well my adult friends and I know planet Earth, we sat down one evening to play the Planet Earth DVD Board Game. We’ve all become quite smitten over the picturesque Planet Earth DVD, so we thought we’d have an easy time beating the game. In our best attempt at thinking like kids—it was adult game night after all—we decided the kids probably would have schooled us and can’t wait to get them involved in the fun.
The game is relatively simple to play and the questions range from easy to really tricky. We played in teams and found it pretty addictive. As you jump around the board answering questions about our beautiful Earth, you can hit category squares (mountains, oceans, deserts, etc.) which allow you to gain cardboard puzzle pieces. The goal isn’t to get the most puzzle pieces, but rather to win the last one, so it doesn’t get overly competitive.
Towards the end of the game, however, some of the pictures begin to repeat, which was a little disappointing considering that the original show ran as an 11-part mini-series with hundreds of different images. Once we had a winner, we were all ready to play again, knowing that we had a new puzzle to play with (the puzzle pieces are two-sided).
At $24.95, this game is definitely worth its sticker price. Planet Earth DVD Board Game is available at www.shopping.discovery.com and is recommended for kids 8 and up.
