We’re focusing on locals today—one “green” and one not—and although they’re not related, they’re both definitely notable.
Thirteen-year-old Cailey Baker needs your vote. The Plainfield resident is the Chicago area winner of the Diamonds in the Rough contest for her essay explaining how her assistant softball coach encouraged her to have more confidence in herself. She’s already won $5,000 and a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower for her softball field. Now she’s going for the grand prize—the regional winner with the most online votes will win an additional $5,000 and a trip for four to New York City to attend a game at Yankee Stadium. Go to www.briggsdiamondsintherough.com to vote for Cailey.
Continuing on with our April theme of green, Chicago-based Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels announced a “Green Twist” campaign in honor of Earth Day. The company will plant a tree for every online sale made this month and for every Twist ‘N Top (where kids can twist and decorate their own pretzel, pictured above) sold at its café at the Kohl Children’s Museum. Also, on April 19, the company will offer certificates for free Twist ‘N Tops from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Glen Town Center’s Greenfest and will plant a tree for each on redeemed. To place an order, go to www.kimandscotts.com.
