In the cold days of winter, it’s especially important to make sure your family eats enough fruits and vegetables to ward off the many illnesses going around. While fresh fruit is ideal, it isn’t always the most convenient, especially when it comes to snacking away from home. That’s why we love the new Funky Monkey Snacks. Each package features a mix of freeze-dried fruit with no added sugars, preservatives, colors or flavors.
We tried out each of the four available flavors: Bananamon (banana and cinnamon), Carnaval Mix (banana, pineapple, apple, papaya and raisins), Javalime (pineapple and lime juice) and Purple Funk (banana and acai berries). We especially liked the Bananamon, which tasted a little like Bananas Foster, and Carnaval Mix varieties. The Purple Funk was tasty as well, but the banana pieces are covered with the purple acai berries, which looks a little odd. We weren’t big fans of the Javalime but didn’t really mind considering we had three other yummy flavors to snack on. Surprisingly, each pouch contains one serving at 110 calories—we expected there to be more than one serving in the pouches since they are fairly filling. Of course, there are three servings of fruit in each pouch, so it’s not so surprising that they are a hardy snack. Plus we love that there’s really nothing but fruit in these snacks—the ingredients list is refreshingly short. The only downside is that the pouches aren’t resealable. The company does suggest consuming the entire package once opened, however, and we certainly didn’t have any trouble gobbling up the fruit in one sitting.
Funky Monkey Snacks are available locally at Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats locations and online at www.amazon.com. The suggested retail price is $1.99-$2.49 per pouch. For more information visit www.funkymonkeysnacks.com.
